Background on vulnerable people of Sub- Saharan Africa

Africa, is the continent most affected by poverty, suffering and hardship besides Asia and parts South America.
Africa has seventy percent of people living below world poverty levels. Over 27 countries in Africa and one in 3 Africans live below poverty level.
Factors contributing to the vicious cycle of poverty, hardship and struggles include food insecurity, lack of access to clean water, lack of shelter and basic healthcare, disability, unemployment, gender and other types of discriminatory practices.
Slow growing economies among Most African nations, lack of infrastructure, famine, natural disasters, corruption, poor governance, inequality in the distribution of wealth, political instability, war and the lack of social justice systems aggravate the impact of poverty especially in rural Africa.
Traditional/cultural beliefs, lack of knowledge and education decreases hope, aspirations, and confidence of vulnerable people. These factors also increase vulnerability in all other areas of life including health, and general well-being.
Poverty contribute to the development of communicable, non-communicable illnesses, increased maternal/child and accidental deaths.
The concerns listed above among vulnerable people, are the factors that lead to the Vision and Mission of Kindred Health Mission Incorporated and the MiLHO Initiative for the vulnerable people of Africa.

Our objectives

Vulnerable people to live in optimal health, with respect and dignity as a basic human right.
To identify people/communities at risk for increased health problems such as those in rural areas, orphans, widows, refugees, internally displaced people, the persecuted, those living with chronic medical conditions, the marginalized people, and those living in unsafe or unhealthy environments.
To investigate the various determinants of health (social, environmental, economic) and to look for solutions to health risks and/or problems.
To promote community health awareness programs that educate on basic hygiene, the importance of access to clean water, clean environment, planting trees and promoting a natural habitat through community educators and health clubs.
To develop safety and public health programs that will prevent accidental deaths among vulnerable people.
To provide medical outreach for free or at minimal cost to vulnerable people in other to meet their basic health needs.
To provide health promotion and disease prevention programs through community health educators and mobile clinics.
To develop health vocational training programs for people who are incarcerated to provide for reintegration into their communities as needed.
To partner with The Missing Link to Improved Health Outcomes( The MiLHO Initiative) to provide evidence-based continuing medical education to clinicians in Africa in order to enhance their knowledge and skills to improve practice outcomes. Courses will be provided online or via conferences and seminars with certificates issued after each course completion.
To provide clinician support and health student mentoring programs.
To obtain statistics, promote quality improvement projects and other evidence-based activities.
To provide agricultural and vocational programs in vulnerable communities for sustainability.
To build educational, health and other infrastructures in vulnerable communities to improve the quality of life of the people.
